The key principle that will underlie everything that we look at over the next four days is the idea that an understanding of the birth chart and a tailoring of the presentation of the material to the person at that level, is the key principle. The model that I've come up with here for connecting with the client, it's a very simple kind of astrological analysis based on the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. In a nutshell, there's the idea that to establish an initial sense of comfort and just simple social rapport with the client, we need to tailor our self-presentation to fit the nature of the client's Ascendant. That's like getting on first base. Just that work. We're going to interrupt each other at the right times, for example.
I smile a little to say that, but you can think ofjust the subliminals that can create such tension between people. Like, if you meet somebody and you're inclined to like them but they're constantly interrupting you in mid-sentence. And you feel that tension? Well, there are people who need to do that in order to feel comfortable and there are people who maybe would never do that and be kind of offended if that happened. So, you have a client - "with everything else being equal," of course, is an essential statement here whenever we take any piece out of the chart like this. But the idea of the client with Gemini rising or Mercury conjunct the Ascendant and if that client gets kind of free-associative and interrupting, relative to you, and it pisses you off, you've blown it. If you meet the person at a party and that pisses you off, you're fine. You get to be human and annoyed by that if that isn't your taste.
But, your task as an astrologer is to establish rapport with a person where we're just at ease with ourselves, comfortable and spontaneous. We're fully inhabiting our ascendants. So that Gemini rising or Mercury conjunct the Ascendant person needs to be affirmed in that. In fact, might like it if, even though this is not your natural style, you interrupt her or him sometimes and create that sense of, yes, we can have this highly free-associative, free-flow of multi-dimensional, multi-tasking kind of communication all happening at once. It doesn't matter if I start this idea and I don't finish it for five minutes because there will be nineteen intervening ideas. The Gemini, the Mercury client is going to be fine with that. It's your job to find that in yourself so that you can skillfully create an environment of comfort.
